Aug 7,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – It was another stunning day at Uplands Golf Club as the University of Victoria Vikes hosted their 18th Annual Vikes Golf Classic on Aug. 6. The full-day golf tournament, dinner and silent auction amassed over $43,000 for the Vikes golf program and student-athlete financial awards. The silent auction alone raised just over $11,000, a record to date.
“Sharing my story about my experience as a student-athlete has helped many girls in Nova Scotia dream big and I’m just one of the many Vikes athletes that get the opportunity to inspire the next generation,” said Vikes golfer Brynn Tomie during her speech at the Golf Classic dinner. “I decided to stay in Canada and play golf for UVic and three years later, I had not only seen most of Canada but I had explored and played in over ten American States, competed at two World University Championships in Czech Republic and in Switzerland. The University of Victoria is one of the few places in Canada where all of this is possible for a female golfer.”
Through the support of presenting partners, the UVic Alumni Association and Uplands Golf Club, as well as premier partners NIKE, T. Litzen Sports, PepsiCo Canada, Dairyland, Cordova Bay Golf Club, the Strathcona Hotel and several hole sponsors, the Vikes Golf Classic is the second largest annual fundraiser for Vikes student-athletes.
Combined with the Vikes Championship Breakfast, set this year for Sept. 30 in McKinnon Gym, the Vikes programs are able to help sustain the Vikes legacy of excellence in both athletic and academic achievements.
The golf program and the Vikes family would like to extend their thanks to the participants and sponsors of this year’s Golf Classic.
