Aug 8,2014(ISN) – The Victoria HarbourCats improved to 24-27 on the season by capturing the
rubber match of a road series in Walla Walla, scoring a run in the top of
the ninth inning for a 4-3 victory on Thursday night.
Carson Schneider got the win in relief of Preston Ryan, who had come to the
rescue of Alex Rogers in the seventh inning, and Gabe Clark’s single in the
top of the ninth provided the deciding run, scoring pinch-runner John
Grimsley. Clark wasn’t in the starting lineup, but came in late in the game
as part of a switch surrounding an apparent injury to shortstop Alex DeGoti.
Rogers went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two
walks, and not recording a strikeout. Ryan was stellar in relief, striking
out three in one inning of work, but being hit with an earned run.
Schneider pitched two innings and faced six batters, with one hit allowed
and one strikeout.
Outfielder Alan Baldwin was 3-4 to raise his batting average to .300.
DeGoti and Aaron Barnett were each 2-4 and Nathan Lukes had an RBI double.
The HarbourCats surrendered two runs in the first inning but responded with
three runs in the fourth, before giving up a single run in the bottom of
the eighth that tied the game 3-3. The HarbourCats outhit the Sweets 11-7.
The HarbourCats, who lead the West Coast League in attendance, end the
season with a 13-14 road record — and are 11-13 at home with three games
to go, and a sweep of the Kitsap Blue Jackets in games Friday night,
Saturday night and Sunday afternoon would push the record to .500 and give
the team a home record above .500.
