Five newcomers joining UBC men’s golf

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men’s golf team will welcome five top young players from across Canada to Vancouver as part of the program’s recruiting class for the upcoming 2014-15 NAIA season.
 
Ontarians Trent Abraham (Hamilton, Ont.) and Gavin McQueenie (Toronto) join Brett Pasula of Red Deer, Alta., Sam Young of Quispamsis, N.B., and Donald Qiu, a golfer from Surrey who completed his high school education in San Diego.
 
TRENT ABRAHAM (5’11 | Hamilton, ON)
Abraham was the male recipient of the 2013 Mizuno All-Canadian Award. The prestigious honour is given out by the Canadian Junior Golf Association each year to recognize two outstanding junior golfers who have shown a commitment to the sport, academics, and community volunteerism.
 
The graduate of Hillfield Strathallan College is currently competing at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Winnipeg. Earlier this summer, Abraham tied for 30th at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship. Before that, he tied for seventh at the Ontario Junior Boys tournament and tied for second at the CN Future Links Ontario Championship in in Minett, Ont.
 
Last year, Abraham was a member of Team Canada at the 2013 North American Cup and placed in a tie for 31st at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
 
He was also a teammate of current T-Bird Scott Secord on the victorious Canadian squad at the 2012 Euro Junior Golf Cup in Fife, Scotland.
 
GAVIN McQUEENIE (6’4 | Toronto, ON)
McQueenie will be a student at the Sauder School of Business after graduating from York Mills Collegiate Institute in the Toronto area.
 
He finished in a tie for seventh at the CN Future Links Quebec Championship in St-Laurent, Que., in July. In May, he in a group of golfers that finished 27th at the CN Future Links Ontario event.
 
Prior to this year, his top performances included a third-place result at the 2013 Ontario Juvenile Spring Classic, an 11th-place showing at the 2013 CN Future Links Prairie Championship and a 10th at the 2012 Ontario Summer Games. In 2011, he was the youngest competitor to make the cut at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
 
BRETT PASULA (5’11 | Red Deer, AB)
Pasula is a 5-11 player out of Red Deer, Alta., who won the 2013 CN Future Links Western Championship in Ponoka, Alta. He was also a part of the Canadian team that won the 2011 Euro Junior Golf Cup in Fife, Scotland.
 
A graduate of Notre Dame High School, Pasula will start in the Faculty of Science in the fall.
 
SAM YOUNG (6’0 | Quispamsis, NB)
A graduate of Kennebecasis Valley High School in Quispamsis, N.B., Young is the 2013 New Brunswick Junior Boys champion, having won the provincial title by 10 strokes. At the 2014 edition of the tournament last month, he finished 12th.
 
Young, who will be enrolled in the Sauder School of Business, also claimed New Brunswick’s Juvenile Boys championship in the summer of 2012.
 
DONALD QIU (5’11 | Surrey, BC / San Diego, CA)
Qiu will be returning home to B.C. after spending the last three years in San Diego, where he graduated from Torrey Pines High School this year.
 
Some of his career highlights so far include a tie for ninth place at the 2011 Canadian Junior Boys Championship in Surrey and a tie for 20th at the 2013 Western Junior Championships. Earlier this summer, Qiu tied for 35th at the 2014 Canadian Junior Boys tournament.
 
Qiu will begin his time at UBC as a student in the Faculty of Arts.
 
All five golfers join a Thunderbirds squad that returns everyone from the team that was 11th at the NAIA Men’s Golf Championship and second at the Golf Canada University/College Championship.
 
Tournament play for the 2014-15 season will begin in September.
