MONTREAL – The McGill University men’s basketball team will open their 114th season of college hoops on Tuesday (Aug. 12) when they host the Indiana Hoosiers, an NCAA Division 1 team from Bloomington, Ind. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Love Competition Hall, a 950-seat facility located inside the Sir Arthur Currie gymnasium at 475 Pine Avenue West.
Indiana, in the midst of a five-game, six-day Canadian tour, opened with a 110-70 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or at College Brebeuf on Aug. 8. They suffered a 109-101 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday at Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que., but bounced back on monday with a 95-85 win over defending national champion Carleton in Ottawa, Monday. The Hoosiers will close out their international tour with a game at UQAM on Aug. 13 at 1 p.m.
The defending RSEQ conference champion Redmen also have three other NCAA squads on their schedule, which includes the Memphis Tigers (Aug. 18) from Tennessee, the Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds (Aug. 26) of Baltimore, Md., and the Fordham Rams (Aug. 28) from Bronx, N.Y.
Advance tickets are available at the Redbird Sports Shop (514-398-1539), located inside the Currie gym. Tickets can also be purchased at the door and go on sale an hour before tip-off. Single-game general admission for each NCAA game is $15 but a four-game NCAA package is available for $40.
McGill posted a 22-11 overall record last year, including a 14-2 first-place finish in the RSEQ conference. Redmen head coach David DeAveiro will miss the game against Indiana as he is currently overseas guiding the Canadian national cadet squad at the FIBA under-17 world championship in Dubai, Aug. 8-16. Standing in as acting head coach is John Dangelas, currently in his fifth season with the Redmen.
Team captain Vincent Dufort returns to head a young McGill training camp roster that features three seniors, 12 sophomores and six freshmen.
This is the first foreign trip for the Hoosiers since 2007 when they played three games in the Bahamas. Indiana, which began their varsity hoops program in 1900-01, posted a 17-15 overall record last season, including a 7-11 mark in the Big 10 conference, where they finished ninth of 12 teams. They fell 64-54 to Illinois in the Big Ten tournament and failed to qualify for the NCAA tourney.
