Aug 11,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is one of the largest amateur rowing tournaments in North America and this year the University of Victoria Vikes rowers came back with four gold medals and had several impressive performances. The regatta was hosted in St. Catharines, Ont. from Aug. 5-10 and has been in existence since 1903.

“We targeted what races we wanted to enter,” said Rick Crawley, Vikes women’s rowing head coach, whose Under 23 lightweight doubles won gold. “We tried to give each athlete at least two races, if not three. I am pleased the Under 23 pairs because they raced hard, were pushed out in the semis and they are only novice racers. This has been a great experience for our young rowers. You learn a lot at events like this and going into the fall I anticipate several of these rowers can make the move onto the varsity crews.”

Gold medals were won by the U23 men’s eight, the men’s mixed dash eight, the U23 men’s quad and the U23 women’s lightweight double.

Rebecca Zimmerman and Jessica Stewart took third place in the senior women’s pair, while the senior women’s four of Zimmerman, Stewart, Elizabeth McConnell and Jillian Legare earned second place in a time of 7:18.563.

The men’s U23 four of Sam HornMaxim EllisonAdam Donaldson and Christopher Marshall finished third in 7:02.506 in the race for the Rodger Sellars Trophy. Third-place finishes also went to the U23 women’s four of Maxine Chapman, Emma Kolbuk, Jillian Legare and Elizabeth McConnell.

The Vikes will turn around to gear up for the fall Canadian University season, which also see Victoria host the national championship in November at Elk Lake.
