“It was a great week of racing and the team learned a great deal amongst some thick competition,” said UBC men’s head coach Mike Pearce. “The experience will certainly provide a springboard into the quickly approaching fall season and the Canadian University Rowing Championships in November.”
Henley gold performances were achieved by:
U23 Lightweight Men’s 2x of Angus Todd and Aaron Lattimer
Sr Women’s Lightweight 2- of Julie Sheppard and Martha Smith
Sr Women’s & U23 Lightweight 4- of Julie Sheppard, Martha Smith, Alexis Thind and Jannelle Mackoff
UBC was also represented by recent graduate Evan Cheng and current Thunderbird Max Lattimer rowing as London Training Centre, who teamed up once again to win the Championship 2- by 0.61 secs over their hard-charging National Team crewmates from Rowing Canada’s Sr. lightweight 4-.
Also notable was Championship 8+ result by the Canadian composite World University Championships team (with five Thunderbirds on board). In only their second row together, they managed to lead to the 1,200-metre mark but could not hang on in the tight field finishing in a strong sixth place. Sydney University of Australia won the race. The Canadian crew will complete at the World University Rowing Championships in Gravelines, France in early September.
UBC rounded out the regatta as the first-place university team, achieving third place overall in efficiency points behind Craftsbury and the winners New York Athletic Club.
