August 12, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – Following an exciting start to the Western Lacrosse Association Playoffs, the Victoria Shamrocks will have the opportunity to eliminate the New Westminster Salmonbellies when they hit the road for Game 4.
Victoria has a 3-0 series lead against New Westminster after a trio of memorable games. The Shamrocks took the series opener 13-8 on the back of Corey Small, who tied Kevin Alexander’s franchise record for most goals in a playoff game at seven. At the Queen’s Park Arena for Game 2, Victoria came back from three goals down, with a minute to go, to win 13-12 on a tally by Dhane Smith with 2.3 seconds left. On Sunday, the Shamrocks won their third straight, scoring four power play goals, for an 11-8 victory.
The Salmonbellies host the fourth game of this series tomorrow, August 13, with a 7:45pm at the Queen’s Park Arena.
Through three games, Victoria has been led offensively by Small and Smith. A transfer from the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks, Smith has paid dividends for the Green & White, topping the club with 17 points, largely in part to seven-point performances in Games 1 and 2. Small has a league-leading 13 goals in the playoffs.
Away from ball, the Shamrocks have also been solid. Tyler Burton has carried his strong work from the regular season into the playoffs. The London, Ontario product has a goal and two assists, while winning an impressive .606% of his face-offs.
“Burton has stepped up and really taken his game to another level,” noted Shamrocks assistant coach Dave Lowden. “To win those five-straight draws [in Game 2] and help win that game was huge.”
If New Westminster wins Game 4, the series will return to 100.3 The Q Centre for Game 5 with a 6:00pm start time. On game day, tickets will be on sale at the arena, starting at 11:00am.
