3,600 Provincials participants will attend QF of FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Aug 15,2014(ISN) – EDMONTON – The Alberta Soccer Association will host its Tier II, III and U12 Tier I
Servus Provincial Championships this weekend in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Spruce
Grove and St. Albert.

The weekend will mark the largest ever gathering of soccer
players for an Alberta provincials competition in a limited geographical area as
approximately 3,000 players are set to descend on Edmonton and surrounding areas.

With the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in town, the Alberta Soccer Association made
the decision to host the Provincial competition in Edmonton and area so that players
from across the province could attend the scheduled quarter-final match on Saturday
August 16th at Commonwealth Stadium. Fortunately, that match will feature Canada’s
U-20 Women’s National team vs Germany. In partnership with Alberta club teams and
district members, 3,600 tickets were purchased for the match and will be distributed
this weekend to all players, coaches, referees and volunteers involved in the
Provincial Championships.

“We are extremely lucky to have FIFA events in our own backyard and we jumped at the
opportunity to be able to give our young players exposure to this type of elite
competition,” commented Richard Adams, Executive Director of the Alberta Soccer
Association. “We were lucky enough to get Canada playing in this match, and another
women’s soccer power in Germany and I have no doubt that our young players will
create a loud cheering section for the match.”

The Servus Provincial Championships officially kicked off on Thursday August 14th in
all locations and will continue throughout the weekend until Sunday August 17th.
U12, U14, U16 and U18 male and female teams qualify for this competition based on
their results in district league play. Alberta continues to offer the most
Provincial competitions of any province in Canada.
