Aug 14,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – In an impressive showing at his first international competition,
University of Victoria Vikes men’s rower Lee Tate Hall medaled in all four events he
competed in at the Commonwealth Rowing Championships held in Motherwell, Scotland in
early August. Canada’s rowing contingencies captured a total of 13 medals to sit in
third-place overall, four of those belonging to Hall.
Hall, who is entering his final year at UVic helped capture silver medals in the
men’s lightweight pair and mixed eight as well as a bronze in the men’s four. But it
was in the men’s lightweight double that Hall and his teammate Matthew Fournier
earned Canada gold.
“The doubles race was aggressive to say the least”, said Hall. “Towards the finish I
thought the Scottish were going to push back, so I called the sprint with about 400
meters to go and we stormed through to win.”
Despite the exciting finish, it was the medal ceremony that followed which was the
most memorable moment.
“Hearing the national anthem being played during the medal ceremony was completely
awe inspiring, and will stay with me for a very long time”.
The Vikes will be hosting the Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC) at Elk
Lake this fall from Nov.1-2 and Hall views returning to the Vikes as a progression
following his first international event.
“Vikes head coach Aalbert (Van Schothorst) has built a highly successful program. I
am extremely excited to be hosting CURC at home. I want to help win this year so
that things can come full circle and I can leave the team as good as when I
Hall was in his first year when the Vikes last hosted the CURC’s, in 2010, also the
sixth and last time the Vikes men hoisted the banner. The Vikes rowing team will
begin their varsity season in late October at the Calgary-hosted Western Canada
University Rowing Championships. For more on Vikes rowing visit govikesgo.com/mrow
