Aug 14,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey program said good-bye to several members of last year’s team that was Canada West conference champions and CIS silver medalists.

The typical anticipated preparation by head coach Lynne Beecroft has paid off though as five new recruits will put on the Vikes uniform this fall, three of whom just helped Team B.C. win gold, 2-1 over Ontario, at the Under 18 Canadian national championship.

The 2014 recruit class is highlighted by Team B.C. Blue members Jenna Dhillon, Kristina Walters-Shumka and Lindsay Cole. The trio are all local to the island, loyal to the Victoria-based women’s league club, the Lynx, and all were members of the Island Wildcats premier team, who played the Vikes for the past two seasons in weekly exhibition.

“Kristina will join her sister Annie, a third-year defender on the team, and they will become the fifth set of sisters to play, concurrently, for us,” says Beecroft. “Kristina is a talented defender who reads the game exceptionally well. Jenna is very versatile and works hard on both sides of the ball and we are happy she decided to stay at home and play with the Vikes rather than heading out East.”

Joining this outstanding group of recruits is Cowichan High School’s Stefanie Langkammer who competed for this year’s national championship bronze medalists, Team B.C. Yellow. Langkammer, a product from up island, brings two-way talent up front and was also a member of the Island Wildcats for the past two years.

“I’m really looking forward to moving to Victoria and playing for the Vikes field hockey team,” said Langkammer. “I feel as though I can learn many skills from the senior players and coaches moving up to a University level of field hockey.”

Delaney Booker, a forward from R. A. McMath Secondary in Richmond, B.C., played along side Langkammer for Team B.C. Yellow this summer and, alongside Dhillon, was selected to the tournament XI. Booker is the only mainland recruit expected to join the Vikes program this year.

“I am really excited to start the next chapter of my life,” said Booker about the relocation to UVic and suiting up for the Vikes. “I am so grateful to have this opportunity to play at such a high level with many talented field hockey players and such knowledgeable coaches.”

In addition to all five recruit’s recent successes at the Under 18 National Championship, Walters-Shumka, Dhillon and Langkammer are all currently participating in an Under 21 Canadian Junior National Team identification camp in Vancouver.

The Vikes women’s field hockey team begin their trial process this weekend and following final team selections will travel East for their pre-season tour of New York and Boston. The Vikes will play Yale (Aug. 23), Harvard (Aug. 25) and Brown (Aug. 26), while their Canada West regular season begins on Sept. 13-14 with a double header on the road against the Calgary Dinos.
