2013 regular season standings: 4th in OUA
2013 playoff record: 1-1
2013 playoff finish: Lost 32-3 to Western inconference semi-final

After consecutive trips to the Vanier Cup in 2011 and 2012, theMcMaster Marauders slipped back in the OUA pack in 2013. Keygraduation losses and a plague of injuries saw McMaster struggleearly, but a strong finish in the second half of the season secureda home playoff berth and the Marauders advanced to the semi-finals,losing to eventual league champion Western.

The Marauders hope to build on the momentum of last year’ssecond half to get off to a quick start in 2014.

The offense returns 10 starters; including quarterback MarshallFerguson who set a McMaster single season record for TD passes with21 last year. The offensive line returns Sean Smith, ZackIntzandt, Tyler Goldsworthy, Nick Firlit and Tom Sterling. Running backs Kasean Davis, Wayne Moore, and Kingsley Amankwaa willget most of the rushing attempts. Veteran receivers BenO’Connor, Max Cameron, Josh Vandeweerd and Declan Cross arebattle tested, while 2013 CIS Rookie of the Year Danny Vandervoortmade a big impact and should be even better.

Defensively, McMaster also has 10 starters back and it is aveteran group of players, which did not give up a touchdown for astretch of 4 games late in the 2013 season. The front-four willfeature Adam Dickson, Kevin Aleinik, Mike Kashak, and ConnorMacKay, along with impressive sophomores Mark Mackie and FabionFoote. The linebackers are led by Nick Shortill, withJoe Richardson, Kyle Fitzsimons, Jeremy Kyei and Jake Heathcote insupport. The strength of the defense will be the secondary, which includes 5th-year seniors Joey Cupido, Allan Dicks, SteveVentresca, and Scott Martin, with experienced veterans KeldynAhlstedt, Jon Ngeleka, and Andrew Surya also available.

Kicker Tyler Crapigna was an All-Canadian in 2012 and an OUAall-star in 2013, so the kicking chores are in very capablehands. Josh Vandeweerd was the primary return specialist, butthere are some intriguing candidates among the recruits that couldimpact the Marauder return game.

Quote from head coach:

“The OUA is extremely competitive…that being said,we feel very strongly about having an opportunity to compete forthe 2014 Yates Cup. I’m confident our uniquecombination of returning veterans and young talent will worktogether to keep McMaster as a presence on the nationallandscape.”
