Aug 19,2014(ISN) – LANGLEY, British Columbia – The University of Detroit Mercy men’s basketball team
completed its Canadian tour with an 88-78 win over Trinity Western University on
Monday night at the Langley Events Centre.

Detroit finished a perfect 4-0 after playing four games in five days during its Vancouver trip. While tonight’s game was
the Spartans first contest of the 2014-15 pre-season.

Earlier this weekend the Titans defeated UFV 81-70, UBC 86-78 and Quest 119-74.

The Spartans started strong with a 9-0 run, but the Titans would be the better team
at the end of the first quarter posting a 21-15 lead. Detroit continued their strong
play into the break with a 49-30 lead.

The third quarter was the best of the night for TWU as they outscored UDM 27-15 to
head into the final frame trailing by seven points, 64-57.

In the fourth quarter the Spartans were unable to gain any ground as the Titans
maintained their cushion and finished the contest with the 10 point win.

Three Spartans hit double figures in scoring led by fifth year guard Justin Bakuteka
with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists, with fourth year forward Kelvin
Smith adding a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Rookie guard Vartan
Tanielian scored 15 points, two assists and one steal in his Spartan debut.

Five Titans scored in double figures led by senior forward Juwan Howard Jr. who
finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior center Patrick Ackerman
recorded his second-straight night in double figures also scoring 15 points. Junior
Patrick Onwenu scored 13 points, while sophomore guard Jarod Williams scored 11 to
go along with six rebounds and five assists.

The Spartans will have a month of training before they continue their pre-season on
September 20 against the Seattle Mountaineers. TWU will have a pre-season CIS
tournament at Queen’s University October 3-5 where they will play – McGill
University, Queen’s University and the University of Guelph.

Trinity Western opens Canada West conference play on October 31 when they will play
to games against Manitoba in Winnipeg. The Spartans CW home opener is on November
7-8 when they match up against the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

The Titans open their 2014 non-conference slate with a pair of exhibition contests
against Siena Heights on November 1 and Marygrove on November 8, before starting
regular season play against Rochester College on November 14.

Game Notes: Both teams shot well from the field with the Spartans finishing at 48.4
percent (31-64), while the Titans finished at 50 percent (36-72)…Both squads
finished with 37 rebounds…turnovers were the difference with TWU finishing with
21, while UDM finished with 11…the Spartans finished 10-27 from the three point
line, while the Titans finished at 3-15..
