With the Para Soccer America Cup less than a month away, the Para Soccer Team is holding its final preparatory camp, from 18-22 August, at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughn, ON. Since only 14-player spots are available, the coaching staff has difficult choices to make ahead of the competition.
The 2014 America Cup – which is being held at the University of Toronto’s St.
George Campus, from the 19-26 September – is the first competitive CPISRA 7-a-side football tournament to be held in Canada.
“This tournament is an opportunity for the Team to not only play in front of home fans, but to grow the Para Soccer program,” said Coach Drew Ferguson.
“The players are showing a lot of intensity. They know that spots are on the line,” said Ferguson, “so it’s been enjoyable to watch them raise their standards.”
Some of the best para teams in the world will be taking part in the competition. Having been drawn in Group A, Canada will first face Argentina and then Venezuela. If things go well the Team will encounter either the winner or runner-up of Group B, which includes Mexico, Brazil and USA.
The America Cup is a qualifying event for the 2015 Para Pan Games and World Championships.
This tournament also marks the start of a potentially busy next two years for the Para program – with the World Championships, Para Pan Am Games (also in Toronto, ON) and the Rio Paralympics on the horizon.
