Story by Phil Meyer/JBAA

James Bay Athletic Association is expanding our athletic programs by adding Under 16 and Under 18 youth teams for the 2014/15 season. This will provide an excellent complement to our two-year running provincial champion Premier Level team and 1st Division men’s teams and our social 3rd Division team.

If you want your son to be involved in a leadership and character-building environment, playing a physically challenging, teamwork-oriented sport, this is the sport to try. We encourage potential players to bring their friends with them to try rugby, as playing together with good friends, in addition to making new friends, is what makes rugby a really positive team sport.

Rugby is so much more than this though. JBAA is an enduring institution in Victoria, one of the oldest amateur athletic associations in Canada, having been established in 1886. We balance a championship focus on winning (25 provincial Rounsfell Cup championships, 57 Island Barnard Cup championships) with a unique social atmosphere that always involves post-game camaraderie providing barbecues to host our visiting teams. This is an important part of rugby culture that the JBAA community believes makes the sport so fun to participate in.

An experienced coaching staff of former players along with guest appearances from senior coaching staff and national team and Premier-level players will provide guidance and structure for the youth program throughout the year.

In addition to this top-notch playing environment, young athletes that demonstrate strong potential in the sport will have opportunities for advancement to representative teams (Tide and BC, even Canada) assisted by the support of the coaching staff and club.

The season commences with an initial meet-and-greet, registration and practice on Friday, September 5 at 4 PM at MacDonald Park in James Bay, our hallowed home field. We will continue to practice on Friday afternoons throughout September with 1 or 2 preseason matches being organized in September. Games are typically played on Sundays.

League details are still being arranged with the Vancouver Island Rugby Union, but we expect to commence league play in late September, early October.
