Aug 26,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey team closed out their three-game tour with their second win on Aug. 26. The 3-1 victory over Brown leaves the Vikes undefeated in all their pre-season games, after previously logging a win over Yale and a draw with Harvard.
Both teams brought a strong intensity from the opening whistle but it was the home team that went up 1-0 early with a penalty corner conversion. It only took a few short minutes for Victoria to respond with a blast from Rosie Beale, also on a penalty corner, to tie the game 1-1. The draw score remained entering half time.
In the second half rookie speedster Lindsay Cole confidently drove into the circle and took a reverse stick shot that sailed right past the Brown goal keeper’s stick and into the net. The excellently executed shot gave the Vikes the 2-1 lead and some momentum in the final stretch.
First-year Vike Kristina Walters-Shumka had a reverse stick attempt, which almost put the Vikes up by two but quality goal tending kept the rookie off the board. Fortunately, teammate Lizzie Yates was there to collect the rebound and the second year’s one-time finish on lifted the Vikes up 3-1 not long before the end of the game.
“We bounced back from a draw against Harvard and were able to capitalize on our chances against Brown today,” said Lynne Beecroft, who enters her 31st season as head coach. “I am excited to watch the growth of this team throughout the season.”
The Vikes will return home after their three-game road series and will prepare for their upcoming Canada West season, which will feature two road and two home games against each of Calgary and UBC. The Vikes begin with their double header in Calgary on Sept. 13-14.
