Conference action gets under way on Labour Day weekend


The Canadian Interuniversity Sport soccer andrugby seasons officially get under way on Labour Day weekend inOntario and Quebec, respectively.

In women’s and men’ssoccer, a total of 32 matches are scheduled on openingweekend in the OUA conference, including 15 on Saturday and 17 moreon Sunday. League play starts on Sept. 5 in the AUS, RSEQ andCanada West.

The Trinity Western Spartans and UBC Thunderbirdsenter the campaign as women’s and men’s nationalchampions, respectively. Both programs have captured the CIS bannereach of the past two years.

The 2014 CIS soccer championships are set forNov. 6 to 9 at Laval University in Quebec City (women) and theUniversity of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown (men).

In women’s rugby, theregular schedule begins on Monday with a trio of RSEQ contests. Theaction starts on Sept. 5 in the OUA, Sept. 6 in the AUS and Sept.19 in Canada West.

The Alberta Pandas captured a record sixthMonilex Trophy as national champions last fall, marking their firsttriumph since 2003.

This year’s CIS tournament is scheduled forOct. 30 to Nov. 2 at the University of Guelph.
