Gaels gallop past Redmen in preseason rugby

KINGSTON, Ont. (August 30, 2014) – The Queen’s men’s rugby team had a full day of action at Nixon Field as they welcomed both Dartmouth and McGill for exhibition matches with the first and second teams.

In the Gaels first game of the day they took on Dartmouth in the morning and came out with a 36-0 shutout win.

Later in the day after a bit of rest the team welcomed McGill in their annual exhibition tilt. Queen’s had a bit more trouble with their Old Four rival but managed to secure a 24-5 victory.

“Another big test for our team with a first half start that saw us with the first 10 minutes on defence inside our 22 metre line,” said Gary Gilks, head coach of the Gaels. “The defence held and by the 20 minute mark we ran in two hard earned tries. The boys played hard and earned a good win.”

Up next for the Gaels is their OUA regular season opener in Waterloo where they will battle with the Laurier Golden Hawks on September 6 at 3pm. McGill will open defence of their RSEQ conference championship on the road at Concordia, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m.
