Aug 30,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – University of Victoria’s men’s swimmer Jon McKay raced for Canada this week at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships hosted at Kihei Aquatic Center in Maui. The second-year Vike earned silver in the 1500-m freestyle in a time of 15:21.82, earning him a new PCS senior record.
McKay also performed strong in the 200-m butterfly, placing tenth overall— and second among Canadians— with a personal best of 2:02.72.
McKay was the only first year on the 2013-14 Vikes swim team, earning silver podium finishes in both the 2014 Canada West swimming championship and the 2014 CIS national championship for his 1500-m freestyle.
This year, the Vikes will add Rob Hill and Peter Brothers to the team, who are both also currently competing at the Pan Pacific Championship in Maui. Hill placed 14th in the 200-m fly (2:03.96) and seventh in the 400-m (4:26.15). Brothers swam alongside McKay in the 1500-m, finishing fourth overall in 15:30.29. He also earned fifth place in the200-m freestyle in 1:52.26.
Brothers also led off the Canadian Relay Team in the 4x200m freestyle relay in a time of 1:50.98 for fourth place.
McKay dives back in Sunday for the 10-km open water race. Hill takes on the 100-m fly and 200 IM and Brothers swims the 400-m freestyle, 200-m BK and 800-m freestyle.
The annual Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships attracts the best Junior swimmers in the world, including athletes from the USA, Australia, Japan, China, New Zealand, Mexico and Fiji. The Vikes start their 2014-15 season at home, swimming the Senior Circuit Oct. 25 in Victoria before travelling to Vancouver Nov. 1 for the College Cup Meet.
