Aug 30,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes rowing program is welcoming all students to tryout for the men’s and women’s novice rowing teams. No prior experience is necessary and there will be many opportunities for students to see if they have what it takes to be on the Vikes rowing program.
“We encourage students who are physically active or have previous sports experience and would like to switch sports at a varsity level to tryout”, says men’s rowing head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst. “You must enjoy being outdoors and on the lake and have a passion to represent the University of Victoria Vikes”.
The novice rowing program will teach athletes everything they need to know and will offer them a chance to represent and race for the Vikes.
“The program can take you anywhere. There is a history of novice rowers from Uvic going on to represent Canada at the Olympics”, adds Van Schothorst.
The Vikes women’s program has won 11 Canadian University National Championships titles and the men’s program has attained six. In total, there have been 52 women’s rowers and 49 men’s rowers with Vikes connections that have represented Canada at numerous Olympic Games.
