Canada Faces Russia in its First Game of the FIVB Men’s World Championship

Gdansk, Poland (Aug. 31, 2014): The Canadian team held its final practice today before its big World Championship opener against Russia on Monday in Gdansk, Poland.

“It’s a great pleasure to be in Poland – probably the best country to host a World Championship because the people love volleyball so much,” Canada’s team captain, Fred Winters, said at a press conference today.

“Bulgaria and Russia are favourites in our group, but the good thing about this tournament is that four teams move on to the second round. The simplest goal for us is to move to the next round, but we will take it day-by-day and see what will happen.”

On Saturday, the Worlds kicked off in Warsaw, and saw the home country beat Serbia in straight sets as 60,000 enthusiastic fans witnessed the action.

“I watched the matched last night and the World Championship has been launched to a very high standard,” said Canada’s coach, Glenn Hoag. “I would like to congratulate the organizing committee, it’s been great to be here already…. I think it’s going to be awesome; obviously this country loves volleyball.”

Canada, currently ranked 15th in the world, is in Pool C, with Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt, China and Mexico. Tomorrow’s game, with the number-two ranked Russians, will be followed by Bulgaria (8) on Sept. 03, Egypt (17) on Sept. 05, Mexico (22) on Sept. 06 and China (19) on Sept. 07.

The world’s best 24 teams are in Poland following a qualifying process, which started in 2012, involving a record number of 279 countries, and concluded in July 2014.
