Sept 4, 2014 (INS) – Preseason Coaches’ Poll (MSoc): Thunderbirds are consensus conference

favourites

Expectations are high for the two-time defending CIS & Canada West champs.
New Westminster, BC – The UBC Thunderbirds are once again the team to beat
in Canada West men’s soccer this year, as evident in the preseason
coaches’ poll result that landed the squad at the top of the rankings.
The two-time defending CIS and Canada West champions garnered all 13
first-place votes from other coaches in the conference, giving them the
highest possible total of 195 points.
The Victoria Vikes received the only other first-place vote and finished
second in the tally with 160 points.
The 2013 Canada West silver medallist Saskatchewan Huskies were the top
vote-getter for the Prairie Division with 146 points. The Alberta Golden
Bears were not too far behind in the division, receiving 132 points –
enough to place them fourth overall.
Conference newcomers MacEwan University Griffins, UBC Okanagan Heat and
Thompson Rivers University WolfPack finished 12th, 13th and 14th,
respectively.
The 2014 season commences on Friday, September
5, with
eight teams in action. The rest of the conference begin play on Saturday,
September 6.
