Women’s Soccer – After 22 straight seasons of competing in the CCAA
(Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association) the UBC Okanagan Heat will
play its first ever CIS (Canadian University Sport) match this weekend
(Sep 6-7) in Prince George versus the UNBC Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves, a former foe in the PACWEST conference, have only been
in the conference for two seasons and should prove an interesting opponent
for the untested Heat.
The Heat finished their preseason schedule with a 2-3-0 record, beating
Douglas and Mount Royal while falling to Calgary and two American schools:
Evergreen State and Northwest University.
The Timberwolves, have one regular season win in their two years in Canada
West and just finished their four game preseason schedule with a tie and
three losses, playing MacEwan and Thompson Rivers. Both of those schools
will also be in Canada West for the first time this year.
Both games will be played in Prince George at the North Cariboo Senior
Soccer League (NCSSL) Fields. On Saturday, Sep 6 the ball is in play at 12
p.m., and then on Sunday, Sep 7 the rematch will feature a 10 a.m. start

Men’s Soccer – After a five game preseason the UBC Okanagan Heat are ready
to begin their journey in the very competitive Canada West conference of
the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport). Jumping from the PACWEST will be
a strong test for head coach Dante Zanatta’s squad.
The schedule has UBC Okanagan opening up for a pair of games in Prince
George versus the UNBC Timberwolves, an old foe. The last time these two
teams played was in October of 2011 at the provincial championships hosted
by UBC Okanagan, with Zanatta as a first year coach. The heat bested the
Wolves for their first provincial medal in the modern era dropping UNBC
3-2 on the Nonis Field in Kelowna, to score the bronze medal.
Since that game in 2011 the Wolves have moved on to Canada West, they’ve
won one game in their first year and tasted victory twice in year two with
three draws last year in 2013. For their preseason UNBC has logged seven
matches winning three, losing three and played to one draw.
The Heat, during their preseason play, finished with one win, two losses,
and two ties.
The former CCAA schools will renew the rivalry on Saturday, September 6
with the game scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. The second of the two-game
set will happen on Sunday at 12 p.m., both games follow the women’s
matches, and are to be played at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League
(NCSSL) Fields in Prince George.

Men’s & Women’s Golf – Last season the UBC Okanagan men’s golf team was
led by Will Deck who finished as the league’s champion with the lowest
total aggregate score, and a third place finished for the team. The
women’s golf team, completely remade from their 2012 national
championship, improved in every subsequent tournament and finished as the
third best team in the PACWEST.
This year the women’s golf team is intact from 2013 with Carolyn Lee and
Kelsey McGillis returning and has added Jessica Kozak, a member of the
2012 national championship squad. A fourth member will help the team in
the PACWEST as Emily Adams from Ladysmith, BC has made the cut.
The men’s squad returns the aforementioned Deck, for his fifth and final
season, Immaculata grads, James Casorso and Michael Lee both return to the
squad as well as Josh Evans. New to the team this year is Cody Boekestyn,
Michael Hooper, Nicholas Krystal, Casey Sullivan and James Sutherland.
The team will once again golf out of the Okanagan Golf and Country Club
with UBC Okanagan playing host to the final tournament of the year
Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5 at the Quail and Bear courses. Because
this is the final tournament of the year the provincial awards and
championship banners will be given out at the end of the two-day
The opening weekend for the golf teams will have be in Surrey at the
Northview Golf and Country Club and hosted by Kwantlen Polytechnic
University. The two-day tournament runs Saturday and Sunday (Sep 6-7).
