Sept 6,2014(ISN) – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies opened up the 2014 Canada West Women’s Soccer season with a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday evening at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.
An intense storm moved into the area 11 minutes into the match causing a 45 minute delay due to lightning in the area.
Once the match resumed the Huskies hit the score board first. Third year striker Jenelle Zapski took a perfect pass down the middle from Carmen Gorlick and beat Wesmen goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson to put the Huskies ahead 1-0 at the 22 minute mark.
Third year midfielder Erica Hindmarsh scored her first of two goals to extend the Saskatchewan lead to 2-0 burying a shot past Thorkelsson at the 27 minute mark.
Winnipeg hit the scoreboard in the 58th minute when midfielder Daniel Bulloch was the recipient of a perfect pass from Chelsea Kwasnicki and beat Huskies goalkeeper Kyleigh Vause to cut the Huskies lead to 2-1.
The momentum on Winnipeg’s side was short lived. In the 74th minute Erica Hindmarsh scored her second goal of the match to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead late in the match.
Winnipeg added some late pressure but the Huskies held on for the victory.
Thorkelsson made 10 saves for the Wesmen while Vause was called upon to make three saves for the Huskies.
Saskatchewan (1-0) will face the University of Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night. Wnnipeg (0-1) will take on the University of Regina Cougars.
