Sept 6,2014(ISN) – Game 1 of the war on the floor between the Victoria Shamrocks (VS)
took place on Friday Night with the defending champions The Six Nations
Chiefs (SN) controlling the play most of the game.
The Shamrocks applied a lot of pressure in the first 7 minutes but Six Nations controlled the tempo
throughout against the weary looking Shamrocks. Six Nations opened the
scoring with a goal from forward Craig Point) who firied a shot that went
over starting goalie Matt Flindell’s left shoulder. A few minutes later SN’s
Colin Doyle fired a shot from the left side using Shamrocks Tyler Hass as a
screen giving the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. FN’s Point scored once again from the
right side putting the chiefs up 3-0 just a few moments after Doyle’s goal.
WLA regular season scoring champ Ryhs Duch finally put the Shamrocks
on the board with a hard shot from the middle making the score 3-1. SN’s
Cody Jamieson returned the favour firing a hard low shot from the Victoria
line putting Six Nations up 4-1 after one period. Shots were 16- 15 SN.
In the second period Jamieson kept the Six Nations run going with a
hard shot that Flindell did not see, bringing the score up to 5-1. At this
point in the game Shamrocks coach Bob Heyes gave Matt Flindell a rest
giving rookie goalie Cody Hagedorn his first ever Mann Cup action at the
2 minute mark in the 2nd to try to stem the tide. Nothing could stop the
Chiefs tonight as soon after SN’s Kasey Beines got to the middle and
whipped a shot by Hagedorn for a commanding 6-1 lead against a fatigued
looking Shamrocks team. Shamrocks newcomer Chris Wardle connected
from the middle to make it 6-2 only to have Six Nations counter with a back
breaking shorthanded goal by Colin Doyle late in the period to make the
score 7-2 Six Nations after 2. Shots19-13 Victoria.
In the 3rd the Shamrocks tried to make a game of it finding their legs but
were only rewarded with an early-unassisted marker from Dhane Smith
and a goal with about 5 minutes left from Brandon Bull.
The Mann Cup opener was an uninspiring match as both teams were
feeling each other out and the Shamrocks unable to get inside and fight to
the net and battle for loose balls off face-offs. It appeared that they were
unable to get their transition game going as they looked to be battling
a bit of jet lag. I expect a much quicker, faster, tougher game from both
teams tonight in game 2. Remember you can always catch the games on
www.webcastsports.net. Logon, about 20 minutes before the game. Cost
is just over $11 or if you are in the Victoria area the games are shown at
Brown’s Social House at both locations Call to make reservations, as they
are sure to have a full house.
