Portland outlasts Kootenay, 5-3



Kennewick, WA- The Portland Winterhawks had a good first day at the 2014 Red Lion
Hotels Preseason Tournament, earning a 5-3 win against the Kootenay Ice at the
Toyota Center.


Kootenay took the lead after the first period on a goal by Luke Philp, 1-0. Portland
scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Portland increased the lead to 4-1 in the third period due to a Keegan Iverson goal.
Kootenay scored two goals within 30 seconds of each other late in the third to cut
the lead to 4-3, but Portland scored an empty net goal in the closing seconds of the
game to seal the victory.

Kootenay will finish the tournament Sunday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m., taking on the
Everett Silvertips. Portland ends the tournament on Sunday as well, playing in the 3
p.m. game against the Red Deer Rebels.
