BC Bears late charge comes up short, Ontario Blues move into 1st place

Sept 8,2014(ISN) – Rugby is an 80 minute game. Today, both the BC Bears and the Ontario Blues received a stern reminder of that fact.

The Blues seemingly had the game wrapped up, leading the Bears 30-3 with under 15 minutes to play. The Bears, much to their credit, did not roll over and fought back furiously. Three late tries by the Bears made the finish very interesting, but in the end the surge simply came too late. The final score was 30-20 in favor of Ontario.

The Blues will head back home atop the Canadian Rugby Championship standings with 14 points through three games, but they will be feeling fortunate, knowing that a series of defensive lapses could have undone 65 minutes of hard work.

The Bears left the field Sunday feeling frustrated by the fact that they should have solved the puzzle sooner, and pondering what could have been had they only played positive rugby at an earlier juncture. When finally managed to open up play and run with the ball, the late scores by Sean White, Bryan Tyrer and Jorden Sandover-Best were of the dazzling variety.

Poor discipline and ball handling errors, however, stymied the Bears attack throughout the game. Chase Kelliher was sent to the sin bin midway through the second half, and the Blues made Kelliher and his teammates pay with a pair of tries, courtesy of Haddon Murray and Seb Pearson. It was a major turning point in the game.

Blues centre Jordan Wilson-Ross had a strong game, including a 30m dash through the tackle-line to set up a try by Dan Moor.

“That’s what I’m here to do, create that space for my teammates,” said Wilson-Ross. “The win puts us in a really good position as frontrunners, but we have three tough games left and we’ll have to just keep working hard one game at a time.”

The Bears chances at a title are all but over at 1-3, but the team knows that they have both pride and more to play for, with auditions for Canada’s ARC lineup still ongoing.

“All we can do is go 1-0 next week,” said Sean White, who scored one try for the Bears today. “We have Ontario again next week in Guelph, but being on turf will play right into our game plan of moving the ball and trying to get line-breaks from our backs.”

The game in Ontario takes place on Thursday, September 18th. The Bears then wrap up their season on the road, playing the Atlantic Rock on September 21st.
