CIS Top Ten Tuesday (#2): Western moves up to No. 1 in women’s soccer

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Western University Mustangs are the newteam to beat in CIS women’s soccer after they improved theirregular season record to a perfect 5-0 thanks to a three-winweek.

The Mustangs, who were ranked fourth in the first coaches’poll of the campaign last Tuesday, blanked Waterloo 4-0, Laurier2-0 and Brock 3-0 over the past seven days.

The 2013 OUA finalistshave outscored their opponents by a 39 to 0 margin in their firstfive outings of the young season.

Reigning two-time CIS champion Trinity Western (1-0-1) holds onto second place in the new poll, while Montreal (1-0-1) falls twospots to No. 3. Both teams opened conference play this past weekendwith a win and a draw.

In men’s soccer, the top-ranked and defending two-timenational champ UBC Thunderbirds kicked off their Canada Westschedule with a pair of road wins, 3-1 against Victoria and 1-0over Fraser Valley. Friday night’s season opener atUVic’s Centennial Stadium was played in front of a raucouscrowd of just under 2,000.

UNB (2-0-0) and York (3-0-1) are tied for second place in thisweek’s Top 10, while Laval (1-0-1) drops two positions to No.4
In women’s rugby, the reigning CIS titlist Alberta Pandas,who are set to open league play on Sept. 20 against Lethbridge, topthe coaches’ poll for a second straight week.

Queen’s (1-0) and Guelph (1-0) swap positions at No. 2 andNo. 3.
