Sept, 7th, 2014 – McKellar, Ontario (VIGolf.ca) – Ontario’s stunning Muskoka region set to play host to the 2014 PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy.

Taking place Sept. 9-11, the national championship will be contested over 54-holes (with a 36-hole cut to the low 60-players and ties) at The Ridge at Manitou in McKellar, Ont.

“We are extremely excited at The Ridge at Manitou to host the 2014 PGA of Canada Assistants’ Championship and look forward to the arrival of Canada’s top assistant professionals,” The Ridge at Manitou’s Director of Golf Travis Spiess said. “The golf course is known for its awe inspiring landscape with inviting fairways, rolling greens, exposed areas of rocky Canadian Shield and artful bunkers.”

At nearly 7,000-yards, The Ridge at Manitou was recently ranked No. 40 on SCOREGolf’s 2014 list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada.

Ontario’s Billy Walsh looks to defend his championship title after besting the field in 2013 at The Willows Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon. The No.1-ranked player from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC captured his first national championship last September, defeating British Columbia’s Lindsay Bernakevitch in a playoff.

Walsh is joined in Muskoka by past winners Mike Belbin (2011, 2012), Brian McCann (2010) and Bryn Parry (1999, 2005). Coincidentally the aforementioned players are also the four highest ranked players in the field.

However, 20 of the top 100 names from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC are in the field at The Ridge at Manitou looking to capture their first PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada.

Top 100 players include John McCann, Alf Callowhill, Brad Kerfoot, Kent Fukushima, Conor O’Shea, Ed Maunder, Reg Millage, Jeff Gross, Scott Borsa, Pat Marcia, Louis-Pierre Godin, Walter Keating Jr, Oliver Tubb, Tyler LeBouthillier and David Wettlaufer.

“We have a very strong field for this year’s PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Titleist & FootJoy at The Ridge at Manitou,” says the PGA of Canada’s Managing Director of Championships & Events, Adam LeBrun. “With so many players inside the top 100, you’re definitely going to see impressive golf and a truly worthy champion.”

The Mike Weir Player of the Year Award is heating up in Muskoka, with valuable points available at The Ridge at Manitou, including 45 for the winner. Following the PGA Assistants’ Championship, there are a few PGA Zone events remaining, and will conclude with the Titleist & FootJoy PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada in November.

The Player of the Year Award is given to the member who attains the most points based on the criteria within the PGA of Canada Player Rankings for the calendar year of the award.

Heading into the Assistants’ Championship, Dave Levesque and Bill Walsh lead the player of the year rankings with 97 points earned this year, thanks mainly to their 1-2 finish at the PGA Championship of Canada.

Oliver Tubb sits in third with 81 points after winning the Canada Cup and PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship.

There will also be a 36-hole Inter-Zone competition compiled of four players on each team representing their respective PGA Zone and is contested over the first two rounds.
