UBC Men’s Soccer: Mashinchi’s late goal gives T-Birds their second straight win

Sept 7, 2014 (ISN) – VANCOUVER – The No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds men’s soccer team completed a perfect
season-opening weekend by defeating the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades 1-0
in Abbotsford, B.C., on Sunday afternoon.

For the second match in a row, fifth-year midfielder Navid
Mashinchi, a Sauder School of
Business student from Port Moody, B.C., scored the game-winning goal for UBC.

Mashinchi broke the scoreless tie in the 80th minute. Just seconds earlier, UFV
goalkeeper Alex Skrzeta came out of his net to stop a shot by rookie forward Boris
Si, but the rebound was collected
by UBC and eventually, Sean
Einarsson, the reigning Canada West
Rookie of the Year from Surrey, found Mashinchi just inside the 18-yard box.

Mashinchi placed a beautiful shot to the lower right corner of the net that beat an
out-of-position Skrzeta as well as a UFV defender on the goal line. On Friday night,
he scored UBC’s second tally of the game at Victoria, which ended 3-1.

Sunday’s game was evenly played and Fraser Valley forced UBC goalkeeper Ante
Boskovic, of Richmond, B.C., to
make eight saves. Skrzeta stopped three shots.

The Thunderbirds had five corner kicks to the Cascades’ four.

UBC, now 2-0, will play its first home games of the 2014 Canada West regular season
next weekend. The T-Birds will host the University of Northern BC on Saturday and
Sunday, with a 2 p.m. kick off on both days. The Saturday game will be at Varsity
Field while the Sunday match will be on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.
