Sept 9,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team opened their 2014-15 season at the Wolf Pack Invitational co-hosted by California State University-Pueblo and Wayland Baptist University. The Vikes women are playing a two-round, two-day competition at the par-71 Pueblo Country Club and following day one sit in eighth place, out of a field of 15 teams, with a score of 333.
The Vikes were led by fourth-year golfer Michaela Abey (Abbotsford, B.C.) who shot 10-over 81 to sit tied for 19th overall. Fourth year Cari Chow (Victoria, B.C.) shot 11-over 82, to rank tied for 24th, while rookie Brianna Carrels was tied for 34th (84), Laura Ferreira was tied for 44th (87) and Shannon Raina finished tied for 58th (92).
“The girls are definitely a little disappointed after their play today but they put in a great practice after they finished their first round,” said Vikes head Justin Clews, who is currently on site with the men at Walking Stick Golf course, while assistant coach Ali Quinlan works with the women. “I’m impressed with the team’s work ethic and and I am optimistic they will finish strong in their final round. The greens at Pueblo Country Club proved to be a challenge for the girls as they were heavily sloped and very fast. The girls spent some extra time on the practice green and should adjust accordingly for their last round.”
Colorado Springs currently lead the entire field with a opening team score of 320 thanks to Alex Darwin and Andrea Ballou who are both tied for fourth overall after shooting 5-over 76 in their opening 18 holes. Hannah Duvall, of Wayland Baptist, as well as Hee-Leina Kim and Julie Sanchez, of Colorado State-Pueblo, are currently in a three-way tied for first individually, as the trio each shot 3-over 71 on the 6190-yard course. Colorado State-Pueblo currently sit fifth overall with a team score of 324.
The Vikes women will wrap up their second round today, Sept. 9, at Pueblo Country Club.
