MONTREAL — Alex Tessier scored 23 points as No.7-ranked Concordia defeated the No.5-McGill University women’s rugby team 34-20 to capture the 10th annual Kelly-Anne Drummond Cup before 500 at Concordia Stadium, Wednesday.

It was the first meeting between the bitter cross-town rivals since McGill upset the first-place Stingers 41-34 in last year’s RSEQ conference championship game.

It also marked Concordia’s sixth straight victory in the Cup game between the teams. The Cup honors Kelly-Anne Drummond, a former Stinger player who died tragically in 2004. The game is symbolic of women’s university rugby supremacy in Montreal. More than $1500 was collected in the stands for WomenAware an organization supported by Kelly-Anne’s parents Doreen Haddad and John Drummond.

Tessier registered a pair of tries, three conversions and a penalty goal to merit player-of-the-game honours for the Stingers, while junior Audrey Marcotte of Chateauguay, Que., was named for McGill.

Caroline Suchorski of Kirkland, Que., scored 10 points for the Martlets. She struck for a pair of first-half penalty goals but Concordia jumped into a 17-6 lead by intermission. She added a pair of second-half conversions, on tries by sophomore Emily Challice of Lakefield, Ont., and Emily Barber, a senior from Fenelon Falls, Ont. Challice’s father, Jeff, played football for McGill in the late 1980s, while Barber’s father, Paul, skated for the hockey Redmen in the same decade.

“ConU had a strong pack.” said Tess Kelley, a former McGill rugby star now serving as program manager for the team. “When we kept ball alive and moving, we made our way downfield nicely. But we still have work to do on defence.”

Rounding out the scoring for Concordia was Hughanna Gaw (two tries), and Erika Ikonomopoulos (one try).

Concordia (2-0) will travel across town to play the Montreal Carabins (1-1) on Sept. 13, while McGill (1-1) plays at Laval (1-1) the same day, in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
