PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. — George Fox’s Sydney Maluenda, as well as the team, each won their third tournament of the 2013-14 season as the Bruins maintained their first-round lead and captured the UC Santa Cruz Spring Invitational that concluded Sunday at the Pacific Grove Golf Links.
After building a three-stroke lead on the first day, the Bruins doubled that margin on the second day to defeat Redlands by six shots.
Maluenda trailed first-round leader Hannah Durette of Redlands by five strokes after Saturday’s round, but stormed back with a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday on the par-72, 5,830-yard course to finish with a 6-over 150. Durette slipped back into a tie for second with a final 72-81=153 score, even with the Bruins’ Loreece Magsanide, who shot a 76-77=153. Taylor Wells of Carleton was fourth with a 79-76=155, and Charlene Dahlstrom of UCSC was fifth with an 82-74=156
Also counting for George Fox on Sunday were Madison Perry, who shot a final 82-77=159 (tied for sixth), and Hailey Ostrom, who carded an 81-80=161 (tied for 11th). Whitney Jammerman completed the Bruin fivesome with an 87-87=174 (tied for 34th). Competing as individuals for the Bruins were Melissa Nugent with an 85-78=163 (tied for 17th) and Kirbi Havemann with a 93-87=180 (tied for 38th).
