McGill goaltender William Waesche

MONTREAL — Rhys Burnell of Abbotsford, B.C., tallied four markers and William Waesche became the second goalkeeper in league history to score a goal as McGill coasted to a 13-7 victory over Queen’s in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association action at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

McGill led 3-0 after the opening quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 12-4 after three.

Waesche, a 19-year-old arts sophomore from Greenwich, Conn., who ranks third among league goalie leaders with a 4.00 goals-against average, opened the scoring with an unassisted marker at 4:47 of the first quarter. The 5-foot-10, 187-pound southpaw ‘keeper made a save and initiated a play to clear the zone.

“There was a breakdown on the Queen’s defence and they allowed Waesche to run clear to the midline but nobody picked him up as he crossed into the offensive zone,” explained Tim Murdoch, in his 11th season as McGill head coach.  “Most defenders don’t worry about the goalie because you rarely see them cross midfield. Usually goalies aren’t as fast and as athletic as Waesche is but he kept going and found himself with daylight to the Gaels’ goal.  He ripped a high, hard shot from 10 yards away that hit nothing but net in the upper-right corner. It’s risky and not a designed play but he’s really fast and is good with his stick-work.. It was a very rare play and exciting to watch it unfold.”

At the other end of the field, Waesche was beaten only twice in the first half and collected the victory before being replaced by back-up Jamie Spagnuolo, who allowed five goals over the final 40 minutes.

The previous time that a goalie scored in a CUFLA regular season game was when Trent University’s Jon Hiltz tallied on a similar play in a 13-11 victory at Queen’s, Sept. 25, 2011.

Spencer Bromley of Surrey, B.C., and Alex Rohrbach of Princeton Junction, N.J., each added hat-tricks for the division-leading Redmen, who were victorious for the third time in as many starts. Rounding out the McGill scoring was Emile Sassone-Lawless of Ithaca, N.Y., with two, while teammate Conner Goodwin, an electrical engineering senior from New Westminster, B.C., collected a game-high six points, all of them assists.

Joshua Smith and Alex Wright paced the Gaels with two goals apiece. Singles went to Brendan Zoehner, Jordan Nanos and Alex Bulla.

Gaels goalie Alex Guiney conceded all 13 goals and took the loss.

McGill (3-0) will continue their bitter rivalry with Bishop’s (2-0) in a match-up of undefeated teams when the Gaiters visit Molson Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m.
