Sept 13, 2014 (ISN) – EDMONTON, AB – It was not the home opener the MacEwan University Griffins men’s
soccer team were hoping for, but more lessons were learned as the University of
Saskatchewan Huskies ran away with a 5-0 victory.
Both teams were evenly matched in the opening 15 minutes with the Griffins’ Dallas
Stern (1styear, Saskatoon, SK) and Jerad Uytterhagen (5th year, Sherwood Park, AB)
buzzing around the Huskies net, but to no avail.
At the 19 minute mark, Jordiem Farahani (5th year, Regina, SK) opened the scoring
after the Huskies broke down the Griffins defense with Farahani traveling up the
near sideline, before guiding the ball in the lower left corner for the 1-nil
With the momentum clearly in the Huskies favour, Brett Levis (4th year, Saskatoon,
SK) added to the score with a well-placed strike under the cross bar.
Rounding out the first half scoring was David Brown (3rd year, Saskatoon, SK), who
beat the Griffins keeper Adam Hajji (1st year, Montreal, QC) with a bottom right
corner strike after receiving the pass from Levis to give the Huskies the 3-0 lead
at the break.
In the second half, the Griffins appeared to recommit to their game plan, but the
visitors were once again in the dominant position. Capitalizing on a corner kick
opportunity from Levis, Austin Bortski (4th year, Saskatoon, SK) connected on the
crossed ball heading it into the top left corner.
Levis was in a giving mood, collecting his fourth point of the matinee on Farahani’s
second goal of the match for the 5-0 victory.
The Griffins’ Yousef Naboulsi (3rd year, Edmonton, AB) and Huskies Farahani were
named their team’s Players of the Game.
The Griffins and Huskies will return to JP Bowl in Edmonton for the second game of
the weekend series on Sunday, September 14, with a 12:00 p.m. start.
