Women’s basketball invites community coaches for pre-season clinic

Sept 16,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA— Even though the University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team is less than three weeks away from the start of their 2014-15 season, their commitment to community basketball has never been stronger. The Vikes are hosting their first-ever pre-season clinic for all Victoria night leagues and Vancouver Island high school and middle school coaches on Sept. 27.

Vikes varsity women’s basketball players are participating, providing skills demonstrations, along with the leadership of women’s head coach Dani Sinclair. Olav Krigolson, a physical education department assistant professor will also lead a session on mental preparation. Vikes student trainer Steve McKinnon will present another training session focused on strength and conditioning.

“This clinic is a great opportunity for our program to connect with coaches of all levels in our community. As university coaches, we benefit greatly from the work these youth coaches do year in and year out, and this is a way to continue to build basketball on the island together,” said Sinclair.

Participation in the clinic is free for island coaches and each session includes clinic notes. Coaches interested in attending can contact Dani Sinclair by email (dsinclr@uvic.ca) or phone (250-818-6321). The clinic runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 27.

The first chance to catch a glimplse of the Vikes women’s basketball team will be on Oct. 4 at McKinnon Gym in a pre-season match up against the Guelph Grypyhons. Tip off wlil be at 6 p.m. on Ken and Kathy Shields Court. The game will also be web streamed with lives stats and video at http://uvic.canadawest.tv
