Holmes wins St. Martin’s Invitational

VANCOUVER – Third-year golfer Evan Holmes, an Arts student from Calgary, won the individual title at the Saint Martin’s Invitational in Olympia, Wash., helping the UBC Thunderbirds place third in the team standings.
The tournament began on Friday with two rounds before concluding with a single round on Saturday at the Olympia Country and Golf Club, which played at par 71 and 6,180 yards.
Holmes began the tournament on Friday by shooting rounds of 1-under par 70 and 3-under 68. He entered Saturday’s final round two shots off the pace but fired a 2-under 69 to finished in a tie atop the leaderboard with Anthony Allen of Western Washington University. Both golfers had a score of 6-under 207, but because Holmes had a better final round, he was awarded the victory.
Rookie Gavin McQueenie of Toronto had an impressive first collegiate tournament, placing 12th with a score of even par 213 (68-75-70).
Banff, Alta., native Jack Wood was one shot behind McQueenie in 13th. After rounds of 1-under 70 and 2-under 69 on Friday, Wood carded a 4-over 75 for a total of 214.
Nate Ollis of Victoria recorded a 1-over 72 in all three rounds to complete the tournament at 3-over 216. Ollis tied for 19th place.
Calgarian Scott Malo, who has returned to the UBC program after two years away, tied for 64th with a result of 23-over 236 (82-76-78).
As a team, the Thunderbirds finished at 2-under 850 (280-284-286), 14 shots behind the winning school, Western Washington.
UBC will have a day off to travel to Bellingham, Wash., for the 43rd annual Western Washington University Invitational, which will run Sept. 22-23.
