MONTREAL — Alex Guay-Bastien scored in the 68th minute and Sarah Boucher her registered a five-save shutout as the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins blanked McGill 1-0 in Quebec university women’s soccer action at Stade CEPSUM, Sunday.
The winning goal came on a McGill turnover at midfield, which resulted in a carabins shot from 35 yards out. The ball skipped then was mishandled by McGill ‘keeper Cassandra Fafalios, which opened the door for Guay-Bastien to cash in on the rebound. Fafalios, who registered four saves, took the loss.
McGill retained possession for 62 per cent of the game but Montreal had a 14-8 edge in attempted shots, many of them from far out. Each side fired five on net and the Carabins had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Martlets freshman midfielder Claudia Agozzino and Montreal’s Mona Ouirzane were selected by the coaches as players of the game.
The playoff race is heating up and McGill is 2-3-1 and tied with Concordia for fourth-place in the eight team RSEQ conference. The Martlets will host UQTR (1-3-2) on Thursday (Sept. 25) at 6 p.m. in Molson Stadium. The division-leading Carabins (5-0-1) play at Concordia (2-3-1) on Friday.
