Sept 21,2014(ISN) – Steven Jandric scored three times, including twice on the power play in the third, to lift the Cariboo Cougars to a 7-4 win over the Valley West Hawks on Saturday at Kin 1 in BC Major Midget League action.

Jandric helped the Cougars erase a 4-2 deficit heading into the third and scored the go ahead goal at 6:39 of the final stanza.
During the first two periods it was the Hawks who took advantage of Cougar penalties, going three-for-eight on the man advantage over the opening 40 minutes to build their lead. The tables turned in the third as the Cougars scored three power-play goals in the first seven minutes to retake command of the game.

First Jandric finished off a passing play which also included Austin Grey and Justin Almeida with the Cougars on a two-man advantage at 4:30. Just over a minute later, with the Cougars still on a five-on-three, Grey beat Hawks goalie Jakob Walter thanks to a feed from Darren Hards and Colton Thomas at 5:42. Finally at 6:39, Grey slid a cross-ice pass to Jandric, who had a wide open net to work with.

Grey iced it at 17:21, taking a slick feed from Jandric and roofing a shot over Walter.
Grey finished with two goals and two assists, while Jandric had the one assist to go with his three tallies.
Todd Bredo added an empty-net goal, shooting the puck into the gapping cage from the corner in the Cougars end of the rink.
The Cougars finished 3/8 on the PP, while the Hawks went 3/10.

With the game tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, the Cougars took their first lead of the game early in the second. Hards scooped up a loose puck in the neutral zone and with a Hawks defenceman pinching, had a clear path to the net. Hards kept a pair of backcheckers at bay and made a nifty move to lift a backhand into the top corner over the glove of Walter at 2:47.
The Cougars maintained the lead for most of the period, but the Hawks regained the advantage with three goals in the final five minutes of the period. First Ian Ross evened the score at 16:15, as his point shot beat a screened Griffen Outhouse.

Then, with Hards in the box for a four-minute head contact penalty, the Hawks struck twice. First Spencer Berry’s point shot hit a body in front and beat Outhouse at 18:04, then Trevor Ayre set up an unmarked Jeffery Stewart in the low slot at 19:24.
Hards’ penalty came shortly after Kolten Carpenter spent four minutes in the box for the same infraction.
Despite all the time spent a man down, the Cougars did generate some good offensive chances shorthanded. In the opening frame Thomas broke in alone on the penalty kill, but couldn’t beat Walter. In the second Jandric and Almeida were unable to convert on a two-on-one.

The Cougars also got into penalty trouble early on, giving the Hawks three power plays less than seven minutes into the game. It caught up with the home side at 7:40 when Luke Gingras tipped in an Ian Ross point shot while the Hawks were on a two-man advantage. Gingras had a three-point day, adding two assists to his goal.
The Cougars got that one back at 17:07 when Chase Dubois sprung Jandric on a breakaway. The veteran forward showed his touch around the net, getting Walter to commit before sliding the puck home.
The two teams meet again on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. at Kin 1 to complete the weekend set.
