MONTREAL — Yasmeen Dawoodjee, a native of Ottawa, was named a tournament all-star as the McGill women’s volleyball team settled for a bronze-medal finish at the Carabins Quebec-Ontario Crossover Classic, hosted by the Universite de Montreal, Sept. 19-21.

The Martlets posted a 2-2 record, sweeping Lakehead twice, including the Day 1 opener and and the third-place game on Day 3. McGill’s two setbacks came on Day 2 of the tourney, dropping a 3-2 decision to Ottawa and a 3-0 loss to McMaster. The loss to the Marauders came with a bit of an asterisk, as it had no bearing on the medal round, so McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau sat out all of her veteran starters to give the younger players an opportunity for some court time.

Dawoodjee, a 5-foot-8 setter, registered 85 assists over her three matches played. The 21-year-old nutional science senior also collected 17 digs, six aces, one stuffed block and three assisted blocks.

“Yasmeen has shown much improvement and was very consistent in setting the ball over the weekend,” said Beliveau, who has returned for her 24th season as bench boss at McGill. “We expect her to lead our team offensively and she has the potential to be one of the top setters in the league.”

This year’s squad has much more depth and height, with five players who stand six-feet tall, four who are 5-foot-11 and three others at 5-foot-10. The roster is composed of six freshmen, five sophomores, four juniors and three seniors.

McGill will play next at the Gee-Gees Preseason Classic in Ottawa, Oct. 3-5, before hosting the Martlet Invitational, Oct. 10-12.

MARTLET MURMERS: A team captain has yet to be picked to replace the graduated Genevieve Plante. The top candidate is expected to be selected from among three seniors, namely Dawoodje, Marie-Christine Lapointe and Daphnee-Maude Andre-Morin.
