Sept 21, 2014 (ISN) – Darren Hards was the playmaker Sunday as the Cariboo Cougars completed a weekend
sweep of the Valley West Hawks at Kin 1.Hards had three assists as the Cougars won
3-2 in the second game of the weekend set. Colton Thomas scored twice, while Steven
Jandric contributed his fourth goal of the weekend. Trevor Ayre and Jeffery Stewart
replied for the Hawks.
With the Cougars up 1-0 after one period, the Hawks wasted no time in getting back
on even terms as Ayre’s shot from the slot beat Cougars’ starter Dorrin Luding less
than a minute into the second. But less than a minute later the Cougars regained
their lead as the Hards-Thomas connection cashed in for the second time in the game.
Stewart tipped home a Luke Renton point shot at 7:48 to make the score 2-2, but the
Cougars went ahead before the second period was out as Jandric potted a short-handed
tally at 17:50. Moments after Jandric set up Hards for a scoring chance that went
wide, Jandric was able to take advantage of a sprawled out Hawks goalie Nicholas
Tellarico to put the Cougars ahead for good. The Cougars hung on in the third to
preserve the win and move to 2-0-0 on the year.
Luding made 19 saves to secure the win, while Tellarico was called upon to make 24
saves.Thomas got the Cougars on the board midway through the opening period. After
hustling on the backcheck to break up a Hawks’ three-on-two rush, Thomas was the
recipient of a heads up drop pass by Hards and proceeded to rip a shot past
Tallarico.Next weekend the Cougars hit the road for the first time this regular
season. They will visit the NE Chiefs for games Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m. and Sept. 28
at 8:30 a.m.
The next home game for the Cougars is set for Oct. 4 when the Greater Vancouver
Canadians visit Kin 1 at 4:45 p.m.
