OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Guelph Gryphons once again open the cross-country running season at the top of the CIS charts.

The Gryphons top the first women’s rankings of the campaign with 100 points ahead of OUA rivals Western (80) and Toronto (76), while the men’s squad (100) opens ahead of Laval (83) and McMaster (71).

To say the Gryphons have dominated CIS cross country over the past decade would be a major understatement as they have captured the last nine women’s national banners and eight men’s titles in a row.

In women’s soccer, the game of musical chairs continues with a new national leader for the fourth straight week. The Montreal Carabins (5-0-1), who had opened the season at No. 1 back on Sept. 2, are back in the pole position this week (up one spot) following a 3-1 victory at Sherbrooke and a 1-0 home win over McGill.

Last week’s top-ranked team, the reigning two-time CIS champion Trinity Western Spartans (3-0-1), falls to No. 3 in the new coaches’ poll behind York (8-0-1).

In men’s soccer, the defending two-time national champ UBC Thunderbirds hold on to the No. 1 spot for the fourth week in a row. The T-Birds are off to a 6-0 start in league play following shutout wins over Thompson Rivers, 3-0, and UBC Okanagan, 4-0.

In women’s rugby, the reigning CIS titlist Alberta Pandas (1-0) also top the CIS rankings for the fourth consecutive week. The Pandas kicked off their Canada West schedule on Saturday with a 24-13 road win over Lethbridge.
