Ingram named Canada West Defensive Player of the Week for second time


Sept 22, 2014 (ISN) – NEW WESTMINSTER, BC – Week 3 of the 2014 Canada West football season may have been
the most exciting yet as the improved Alberta Golden Bears notched their first win
in almost four years, a thrilling 44-42 shootout with the Regina Rams. The Calgary
Dinos proved their mettle on the road, overcoming the pesky Saskatchewan Huskies,
38-24 while the Manitoba Bisons won their second straight game, holding off the UBC
Thunderbirds, 20-10.

Golden Bears quarterback Curtis Dell, Huskies safety Mark Ingram and Bisons
placekicker Ryan Jones have been selected as this week’s Canada West Football
Players of the Week for their incredible individual efforts over the weekend. This
is Ingram’s second time being honoured, after also winning the award for Week 1.

OFFENCE: #6 Curtis Dell, Quarterback (Alberta Golden Bears)

University of Alberta Golden Bears fifth-year quarterback Curtis Dell completed 63%
of his passes and racked up 271 passing yards and four touchdowns to lead the Golden
Bears to a thrilling 44-42 win over the Regina Rams on Saturday at Foote Field. It
was Alberta’s first on-field win since November 3, 2010.

Dell completed 17 of 27 passes on Saturday, one week after tossing for 413 yards.
Previous to those two starts, his last start for the Bears was in 2012. He now leads
Canada West in passing yards per game, with an average of 342, while he has also
tossed the third most touchdowns in the conference with six.

The Calgary-born QB staked Alberta to a 28-13 half-time lead as well as a 44-29
fourth quarter lead. He guided the Bears on a six-play 56-yard drive in the middle
of the fourth quarter that culminated in the winning points when running back Ed
Ilnicki rumbled in from two yards for the touchdown.

Alberta, now 1-2 on the season, returns to action this coming weekend when they
travel to Vancouver to take on the 0-3 UBC Thunderbirds.

DEFENCE: #6 Mark Ingram, Safety (Saskatchewan Huskies)

University of Saskatchewan safety Mark Ingram once again proved to be tough on
opponents forcing two turnovers and completing 8.5 tackles in a 38-24 loss to the
Calgary Dinos Friday night.

The fifth-year Agriculture & Bioresources student marked a forced fumble and
recovered the ball at the Saskatchewan 21-yard line just three minutes into the
game. He added an interception in the second quarter that led to a Huskies

Ingram, a 2013 CIS All-Canadian, also led the Huskies with 8.5 tackles – seven solo
– in the game.

The No. 6 Saskatchewan travels to Regina to meet the Regina Rams Saturday.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #38 Ryan Jones, Placekicker (Manitoba Bisons)

Manitoba Bisons placekicker Ryan Jones accounted for ten of the 20 points scored by
the #9 Manitoba Bisons as the won at home by a 20-10 score over the UBC Thunderbirds
during the annual Homecoming Game on Saturday, September 20.

Jones was perfect as he went three for three in field goals and converted the lone
extra point. He also had a 51.7-yard kickoff average on three kicks during the home

The first-year Jones knocked down a field goals of 36 yards in the second quarter to
push the home side lead to 12-0 then boomed a 40-yard field goal at the end of the
third period to increase Manitoba’s lead to 15-10. He also added a 19-yarder to
finish the scoring at the end of the fourth.

Jones is fourth in conference scoring with 20 points after three games.

Manitoba (2-1) will now travel to play at #2 Calgary (3-0) on Friday, September 26
and the contest will also be the Canada West Shaw TV Game of the Week. Kickoff will
be at 6 p.m. MT.
