Acquire sharpshooting lefty Johnny Powless and Joel McCready
(ISN) – Vancouver, BC (Monday, September 22, 2014) – With the National Lacrosse League draft just hours away, the Vancouver Stealth got the jump on the headlines by making a blockbuster trade that will immediately impact their outlook on the floor and shape their team for years to come.
A deal was finalized late Sunday evening for the Stealth to acquire sharpshooting left hander Johnny Powless as well as right hander Joel McCready from the Rochester Knighthawks. In addition to Powless and McCready, the Stealth will receive the Knighthawks 2014 first round pick (9th overall) and their third round pick (23rd overall – from Colorado). In exchange, the Knighthawks will receive Vancouver’s 2014 first round pick (2nd overall) as well as their second round pick (11th overall); Rochester will also receive the Stealth’s first round picks in 2015 and 2017.
Powless is one of the biggest young names in the lacrosse world having come into the league as an eighteen year old in 2012. Since then all he has done is win, collecting three National Lacrosse League Champions Cups, two Mann Cup titles (as a junior age call up with the Six Nations Chiefs in Senior A Lacrosse) and one Minto Cup (as captain of the Six Nations Arrows) as the top team in Canadian Junior Lacrosse all by the age of twenty-one. In 2012, Powless was named to the NLL All-Star team, the All-Rookie team and won the league Sportsmanship Award. This past year, Powless scored 30 goals and totalled 53 points for the Knighthawks. He was named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Minto Cup (which was hosted at the Langley Events Centre) as he led all players during the six game series with 29 points (8 goals, 21 assists).
“Both players are proven winners. Johnny is a lacrosse prodigy,” Head Coach Dan Perreault expressed, “he has the ability to change the course of any game with his skill – be it a highlight reel goal or a deft pass. Being able to team him up on the floor with someone like Rhys Duch will change our entire offensive perspective.”
McCready is coming off his best season as a pro having won his second NLL Champions Cup. Known for his tenacity, McCready scored 29 points in 10 games for Rochester in 2014 and capped off the strong regular season showing with an explosive playoff where he notched 9 points in three games.
“This is a monumental trade for our organization that brings two proven winners to Vancouver. It’s not often that opportunities like this come up, and we wanted to make a statement to our fans and team of our intention to compete for the Champions Cup in 2015. Bottom line, this trade is a game changer. We are thrilled to welcome Johnny and Joel to the Stealth family,” Doug Locker, President and General Manager of the Stealth noted that this move will have a major impact on the franchise both this season and beyond.
The NLL draft takes place tonight with the Stealth holding picks at 9th (from Rochester), 21st, 23rd (from Rochester via Colorado), 25th (from Toronto), 30th, 39th, and 48th overall.
