CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Davidson’s Alan Reiter, Max Riehemann and Matt Pacifici led the way as the Wildcats knocked off No. 2 Virginia 2-1 in non-conference action Wednesday night at Klöckner Stadium.
Off to their longest unbeaten streak since the 1982 season, the Wildcats improve to 4-0-2, while the Hoos fall to 4-2-1. The win was Davidson’s first against a ranked opponent since upsetting No.
After threatening with a number of chances in the first half, Reiter provided a 51st minute equalizer with a blast into the lower left corner off an assist from Maxi Pragnell.
Less than eight minutes later, Riehemann scored his first goal since netting three as a freshman in 2011. The eventual game winner came off a Reiter header to Riehemann.
Virginia, a six-time national champion and 2013 NCAA semifinalist, grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute when Nicko Corriveau put away a feed from fellow midfielder Luc Fatton. Corriveau’s first strike of the year was redirected just out of Pacifici’s reach.
“UVA is tough place to win so super proud of our guys effort and performance,” head coach Matt Spear said. “The players worked their socks off and it was another comeback win. And I know it helps a lot of people outside our team to believe Davidson can elevate and achieve at the highest levels.”
Both teams attempted six shots in the opening half before the Cavaliers finished with a 15-10 margin, while the Wildcats held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Pacifici recorded a game-high six saves for Davidson.
