Sept 28,2014(ISN) – MEXICO CITY – Canadian Olympic medallist Roseline Filion of Laval and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal took gold and silver on women’s 10-m tower Saturday night in diving action at the Pan American Sports Festival.
The multi-sport competition spread out over a three-month period is warm-up to the Pan American Games set for Toronto in July 2015.
Filion totalled 358.80 points and Benfeito was a close second at 358.65. The two Canadians won a bronze medal together on 10-m synchro at the 2012 Olympics.
“I really didn’t expect to win,” said Filion, currently enjoying her best year as an individual diver. “I had a rough preliminary, I didn’t dive well and my score was not impressive. But my coach told me not to get down about it and to be more aggressive in the final.”
Both Filion and Benfeito said off-season competitions are a tough adjustment.
“Usually at this time of year we are just starting our training and not even diving off the tower,” said Benfeito. “Still I wasn’t completely satisfied with my performance today.”
On men’s three-metre, François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., was fifth.
“This event is a good opportunity to sprinkle some competition into our early season training,” said Mitch Geller, Diving Canada’s technical director. “The divers are still getting their bearings but it is an opportunity to see the competition less than a year out from the Pan Am Games.”
Competition continues through to Tuesday
