VIKES BOUNCE BACK TO EDGE SPARTANS 4 – 3

Sept 29,2014(ISN) – The UVic Men’s Hockey Team was able to recuperate after the home opener
loss on Friday to the Spartans. The Vikes defeated TWU, 4 – 3 at Ian
Stewart Center on Saturday afternoon in their 2nd game of the 2-game
weekend series.

Vikes goalie Nick Babich, rebounded from the loss to Trinity Western
University Spartans on Friday evening with a gutsy performance on
Saturday, facing a total of 47 shots and only allowing 3 goals.

The Spartans countered with goalie Nic Clark who faced a total of 17 shots
in the first half of the game, allowing 1 goal. They replaced Clark in
the net half way through the 2nd with Aaron Oakley, who faced 19 shots
allowing 3 goals.

The BCIHL leading scorer from last season J.P. Villeneuve scored early in
the 1st period giving the Spartans the early lead. The Vikes were able to
answer back with Shawn Mueller scoring at the end of the 1st to tie the
game.

The Spartans took the lead again early in the 2nd period before Vikes
veteran forward Adam Klein scored his 1st, unassisted and shorthanded goal
with 2:56 remaining in the 2nd period. Vikes goalie Nick Babich assisted
on Evan Warner’s go ahead goal with 1: 45 remaining in the 2nd . The Vikes
had their first lead of the game and the weekend going into the 2nd
intermission.

Vikes forward Adam Klein scored his second goal and the eventual game
winner at 16:30 of the 3rd period. Spartans Cody Fidgett, the second
leading scorer in the BCIHL for Selkirk College Saints last season, scored
his 2nd goal of the game mid way through the 3rd period to make the game
close.

The Vikes went 1 for 6 on the power play while the Spartans went 1 for 7.

The Vikes had 8 rookies in the line up on Saturday. Coach Harry Schamhart
said this win showed the kind of character the Vikes have in the dressing
room. The Vikes players pulled together and worked hard to win the second
game and split the weekend series (1-1).

The Vikes head to Eastern Washington University to play the Eagles on
October 10th and 11th in Cheney, Washington.
