OTTAWA (CIS) – Caroline Suchorski, a rugby player fromMcGill University, and Stephan St-Martin, a cross-country runnerfrom the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières, are theArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week forthe period ending Oct. 5, 2014.
Suchorski, a fourth-year science student from Kirkland, Que.
,scored 18 of her team’s 23 points last Saturday to lead theMartlets (3-3) to a crucial 23-21 win over cross-town rivalMontreal (3-3), virtually clinching a playoff berth for McGill. The5-foot-8 centre tallied one try, a pair of conversions and threepenalty kicks, including the game-winning kick with four minutesremaining in the contest. With one game left on the RSEQ schedule,Suchorski currently leads the conference in scoring with 78points.
St. Francis Xavier’s rugby player Emma Taylor, Queen’ssoccer player Jessie de Boer and Victoria field hockey playerAmanda Kurianowicz were also nominated for the women’saward.
St-Martin, a first-year education student from Lévis, Que.,claimed individual gold at the Rouge et Or Invitational, Saturdayin Quebec City, thanks to his time of 24:01.6 over 7.5 kilometres,just under two seconds better than Benjamin Raymond, the first ofsix runners from powerhouse Laval to cross the finish line rightbehind him. The talented freshman topped a field of 60 competitorsoverall and has now won each of the two events he has competed inon the RSEQ circuit.
Saint Mary’s cross-country runner John Kuto, York soccerplayer Joey Cicchillo and UNBC’s soccer player Ty Venholawere the other male nominees.
