Edmonton Drillers Nick Myktiuk 31’

The Edmonton Drillers of Alberta opened the Sport Chek National Club Championships U-18 Cup with a 1:0 victory over Rapides de Chaudière-Ouest of Quebec, thanks to a first-half goal from midfielder Nick Myktiuk in the 31st minute. With the victory, the Driller’s move into second place in Group A, behind Surrey United SC on goal difference.

The match kicked-off under ideal playing conditions with the temperature hovering around 16 degrees Celsius.

The opening 25 minutes of the game were played at a high tempo with the Drillers, dressed in full navy blue kits with gold trim, opting for a direct attack, while Chaudière-Ouest, dressed in white tops and blue shorts, attempted to maintain possession.

It would be the Driller’s style of play that proved most effective in the early stages as the team’s strikers narrowly missed a number of dangerous passes that were delivered through the centre of the Rapides’ defence

After several missed connections and a number of offside calls, the Driller’s attack finally clicked with Myktiuk making a well-timed run, from a midfield position, to collect a through ball that left him alone against the keeper. Myktiuk then finished off the play by calmly sliding the ball to the keeper’s left and into the short side of the net.

The Drillers came close to doubling their lead, just before half, as striker Kirkland Moody, following a well weighted pass, also broke in alone on net; however, this time, Rapides’ Keeper Antoine Pouliot prevailed, making a strong two handed save to his right.

As the second half kicked-off, the Rapides pushed hard for an equalizer and began to dominate possession. The territorial advantage almost paid off mid-way through the half as Rapides’ striker Thomas St. Maurice capitalized on a mix-up in the Drillers defence only to volley a shot over the crossbar.

Despite surrendering much of the possession in the second-half, the Drillers stayed compact in defence and hung on for a 1:0 victory with keeper, Dylan Powley, recording the shutout.
