Julea Walsh, Karah Fleet, Kayla Brace, Rachel Henry x2
The 2014 Sport Chek National Club Championships U-16 Girls Cup started under clear blue Newfoundland skies, but as the light grew dim, the clouds rolled in, setting a cool damp stage for the evening match between Halifax County United of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island’s Hillsborough United.
Although the temperature was cool, Halifax County United was raring to go, notching an early goal en route to a 5:0 victory.
Halifax County’s Rachel Henry placed them in a comfortable 3-0 lead, getting her second goal of the match after controlling an errant ball in midfield and storming into the 18-yard-box, to blast a shot to the bottom left corner, just past the out-stretched arms of the Hillsborough United keeper.
Kayla Brace added County’s fourth goal off a penalty, which was exceptionally well struck and perfectly placed just inside the post.
The Nova Scotia team added one more before the final whistle, but much of County’s dominance was due to the strong play of midfielder Rebecca Power. She consistently distributed the ball effectively and took control of the match.
Halifax County has tomorrow off but will face BC’s Mountain United FC on Friday.
