By Adam Morissette
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Atlanta Braves prospects broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth with a run and added one more in the ninth to escape with a 3-1 win over the Junior National Team in the Fall Instructional League finale Saturday.
With the game knotted at zero in the seventh, the Braves opened the scoring when a lead-off double came to score on three consecutive two-out walks issued by reliever Austin Shields (Dundas, Ont.).
The juniors fought right back in the home half of the seventh picking up their only two hits of the game that subsequently scored their only run of the game as Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, Alta.) singled home Peter Hutzal (Calgary, Alta,) who had led off the inning with a base-hit.
After the Braves took the lead in the eighth, they added a run in the ninth on a triple and single that came off reliever RJ Freure (Burlington, Ont.).
Through six innings, neither team could get anything going offensively as the juniors received a pair of solid pitching performances from Josh Burgmann (Nanaimo, BC) and Will McAffer (North Vancouver, BC).
Burgmann started and worked three scoreless innings that saw him only allow one hit and two walks, while recording two strikeouts.
McAffer also tossed three scoreless innings allowing only two hits and one walk.
